Together Forever...
I'm sorry it's been a while since I last provided an update. This platform has been a crucial communication tool during tough times (and maybe I psychologically associated it with trauma), but it's just as important to use it to share good news as well...and we've had a LOT of that recently!!
The Final Mile
Two weeks ago, Corrina had her routine MRI. The length between these check ins are increasing now as Corrina puts the C-word way behind her into life's rearview mirror (still zero signs of tumor regression). It had been almost a year since Corrina visited the Smilow Cancer Center and as much as we love Dr. V and Joy, we're happy that our visits are gaining less frequency.
This War Has Many Battles
To alleviate any concerns, Corrina's surgery was a resounding success by her doctors' standards.
The Post We've all Prayed For
It is with the most ecstatic joy that I am able to post the following update to our community of loved ones:
CORRINA IS IN FULL REMISSION! SHE HAS BEAT THE MOST AGGRESSIVE FORM OF MALIGNANT BRAIN CANCER!
California, At Last...
As I write this, Corrina and I sit outside on a gorgeous poolside deck overlooking the sprawling, beautiful hills of San Diego. It’s a perfect 65 degrees out, the sun is shining, and it feels like we don’t have a care in the world. A year ago, I never thought we’d have the opportunity to be in California together - Corrina’s doctor made it sound like long travel was not ever going to be an option. Corrina was still vulnerable to blood clots and sitting for long periods of time was problematic for patients in her state, so we put the idea out of consideration.
Never, Ever Give Up
Whenever Corrina goes in for her quarterly MRI’s, we all hold our breath not knowing what the results will be. Glioblastoma is an aggressive force. It’s not uncommon for most glioblastoma tumors to double in size from one MRI to the next.
But not Corrina’s. Yesterday, the news could not have been better. Corrina’s tumor has shrunk by 75%!!!!!!
The New Normal - Acceptance and Gratitude!
This is the post I have dreamed about writing. It is my ecstatic joy and honor to report that Corrina's tumor is shrinking!!!
Miracles do happen.
Our Unstoppable Birthday Girl!
The world became a much better place on this day back in 1977. Happy Birthday babe!
Summer is for Swimming & Spritzers
Corrina hasn't been in the hospital for over 4 months now! Woohoo!! We're enjoying the beautiful weather and have been taking advantage of any and every opportunity to get outside. Corrina usually has twice-daily walks (morning and afternoon, split up with a healthy midday nap...ah the life) and now that she has graduated from the Live Strong Program at the Wheeler YMCA, we have more time to take in the sunshine.
CLAUDIA
This one is not about Corrina. It is in honor of her rock: the captain and quarterback of Heal Team-C, Claudia.
There is no mother like Claudia. There is no human like Claudia. Today (and all days), I am continually inspired by the strength, love, and perseverance of this amazing woman.
Change Your Perspective and Change the World
This is a story of turning the sourest lemons into the sweetest lemonade…
A Day in the Life
Today marks the start of a revolving door of California visitors for us as we welcome one of Corrina’s dearest friends Andrew, then follow that right up on Sunday with the return of Corrina’s dad David (oka ‘senior’, as I am ‘junior’), and close out the show with Corrina's brother Dylan next week.
Light and Laughter from the New Norm
Hello from HQ of Heal Team-C!
We'd like to give a HUGE thank you to Nicole Annatone, MaryEllen Manship, Kaitlin Voglesong, Donna Frustere, Jenny Schwab, Jill Konopka, Kristen Jones, Julie Goldstein and all the extended members of Heal Team-C who rallied and sweated out their support for both Corrina and Claudia at the Workout for Wellness fundraising event thrown at New York Sports Club in West Hartford yesterday.
New Year, New Roads, New Perspective
We're long overdue for a check in.
A friend of mine gently reminded me the other day that concern starts to build if updates don't come regularly. I'm sorry for the radio silence. Let's allay any concern right out of the gate...
A Bittersweet Thanksgiving
I often look forward to writing these journal entries. I find the process to be incredibly cathartic. There's something about putting all the hurt, anger, confusion, frustration, successes and joys of our experience into words that makes me feel like we're on top of all this. We can control our words. We own our words. So when our path is verbalized, it feels (to me) like the mountain gets put behind us and we're on to a new present.
A bump in this long road
Those of you have come by to visit Corrina over the past several weeks can attest to the fact that she has been thriving. Corrina's strength and mobility are increasing tremendously - no need for a walker anymore; a cane suffices for trips out of the house and gets put off to the side when we're home. (That's one of the benefits of having a small, cozy place - there's always a good wall to hold onto within reach). As you know, this is a woman who doesn't need secondary encouragement to motivate her to engage in physical therapy.
Organizing Support
The outpouring of support we've received from all of you has been incredible. Without question, the first silver lining visible in all of this has been witnessing the magnitude to which the community has rallied to provide Corrina (and her family) with support. "Thank you" doesn't begin to frame our gratitude adequately.
